Many years ago, when Alex Wilson Lodging was merely a thought, a dear friend and mentor told me that “someone else’s blessing is on the other side of your obedience.” That profound statement was the catalyst to putting this dream into action.
A group of us professionals who work in the transplant department at a local Dallas hospital saw an enormous need. Nearly 40 percent of our transplant patients reside more than 60 miles away from our hospital. In order to be on the transplant list, they have to have temporary housing within 60 miles of the hospital, for themselves and a caregiver, prior to, during and after the transplant. Due to the enormous expense that creates beyond the transplant itself, we saw an opportunity to help. By providing affordable temporary housing, we can provide peace of mind for the patient and their family. Our goal is to one day have a permanent building near Dallas’ Medical District. This ‘home’ will not only provide affordable lodging, but also a supportive community of other patients and families going through a similar experience.
We are now in the position to accept donations! Our first fundraiser is December 16, when will be hosting a 5K and fun run/walk. And we are actively seeking partnerships with local hotels to be able to provide temporary housing until we are able to have our own building.
There are so many people to thank, who have put in so much time and effort towards making Alex Wilson Lodging a reality. From the board members have gone above and beyond to the initial supporters of this cause and the family of Alex Wilson, we are truly grateful.
